3 LIVE CE UNITS

Instructor: Dr. Virgil Karnatz DDS

As marijuana becomes increasingly prevalent both medicinally and recreationally, it is essential for dental professionals to understand its implications for patient care. This course explores the history of marijuana use, from its medical prescription in the mid-1800s to its eventual criminalization in the 20th century, and its modern-day legalization in over two-thirds of the U.S. for medicinal use, with more than one-third of the country now allowing recreational use.

Dental practitioners will gain critical insights into how marijuana affects oral health and how its use may impact dental practice, particularly in areas like sedation, pain management, and patient behavior. With the evolving legal landscape surrounding marijuana, dentists must stay informed to better address the needs and concerns of patients who use marijuana.

After completing this course, you will understand:

  • The role of cannabinoids and how marijuana produces its effects on the body and oral health.
  • The benefits and side effects of marijuana, including its impact on the oral cavity and potential harm.
  • Various marijuana delivery systems and how they affect dental practice and treatment.
  • Preventive measures patients can take to protect their oral health from marijuana's effects.
  • The relationship between marijuana use and dental treatments, including TMJ and anesthesia.
  • The use of cannabidiol (CBD) in dentistry and who is authorized to prescribe medical marijuana.
Topic was very relevant in today’s dentistry and presenter did a great job. This was my first time with ACES, and I plan to use it more for my dental CE.

About Live, Interactive Continuing Education Webinars

A live, interactive webinar is similar to attending a continuing education seminar in your community, except that you attend via your computer, tablet or mobile phone.  Each course is live and allows and encourages your participation.  As long as you have access to a  device that can play sound, you can participate in an ACES webinar. No special computer knowledge or equipment is required to participate in our webinars. When you enroll in an ACES course, you will be sent an email with the course syllabus and complete information on how to join the webinar. At the conclusion of your live webinar, you will receive an email with a link to your online quiz. Once you complete your quiz, you’ll automatically receive your continuing education certificate via email.
