Treating the Aging Baby Boomer Population: From Periodontal Disease to Dementia

Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Course - 3 Hours Credits

Instructor: Dr. Virgil Karnatz DDS

Course Description:

Older adults are more susceptible to oral conditions and diseases due to an increase in chronic conditions, and physical/mental disabilities including dementia. The purpose of this course is to identify many of these problems and address the challenges in treating the aging population. Dental treatment of the geriatric population is a critical part of the health maintenance mechanisms for the elderly and medically compromised individuals. As Baby Boomers are aging, you will see more and more of this age group in your practice. We will be discussing treatment options including restorative, periodontal disease, and dental implants as it relates to the aging population.

After completing this course, the clinician will be able to understand:

  1. Physical assessment of the elderly patient
  2. The most common medical conditions that may be identified
  3. Decision making related to treatment
  4. Treatment planning key considerations for the geriatric patient
  5. How to treat patients with Alzheimer's disease
  6. Baby boomers and periodontal disease
  7. Implant therapy for the geriatric patients
