Course Description

This introductory course will discuss orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), their causes, their symptoms, and how the dental team can identify and support patients who present with OMDs. We will take a deep dive into myofunctional therapy, fascia, and airway dentistry and medicine. Attendees will walk away with an understanding of how myofunctional disorders affect patients’ oral health, systemic health, and quality of life.

Course Objectives

  • Define Myofunctional Therapy & Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs)
  • Identify common OMD symptoms
  • Describe the etiology and impacts of Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs)
  • Revisit crucial head and neck anatomy landmarks in OMDs
  • Explain the role of fascia, fluid movement, and tensegrity dynamics in the human body
  • Understand presentation of OMDs in different age groups
  • Perform a general screening for TOTs and OMDs
  • Be familiar with case studies of OMDs and treatment modalities
