Instructor: By Dr. Joanne Conaway, ND, BSN, RN
- One of the most common medical conditions that the dental professional will encounter is patients with eating disorders. Eating disorders affect more than 24 million Americans. Because eating disorders primarily affect women ages 12 – 25, who are otherwise healthy, the dental staff members are often the first health professionals to suspect that a serious health problem is occurring.
This course will review the most prevalent eating disorder diseases. It will examine the common causes of these conditions as well as the clinical signs and symptoms. Specific attention will be paid to the oral manifestations resulting from each eating disorder. The course will also discuss the most appropriate recommendations that the dental team can make to limit the oral damages caused by eating disorders.
After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:
- Describe the dental and medical complications often associated with anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder.
- Discuss the most common risk factors for a person developing an eating disorder.
- Describe the medical/psychological treatment options for people with eating disorders.
- List the most common oral signs & symptoms associated with an eating disorder.
- Describe the proper oral home-care recommendations for patients with a purging disorder.
