3 LIVE CE UNITS
Instructor: Dr. Joanne Conaway, N.D., B.S.N., R.N.
- We live in what is referred to as a very mobile society and during the course of any day all of us are exposed to numerous potentially life-threatening organisms. These may be in the form of pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi. We may not like to think about this and often take our environments for granted but we are frequently and often unknowingly exposed to many infectious organisms we are not even aware of. These organisms can cause diseases that can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. Microorganisms that can be transmitted from animals to humans exist as well and the infectious diseases caused by these organisms are called Zoonotic diseases.
After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:
- Recognize the dental team’s responsibility to adhere to scientifically accepted infection prevention and control practices and the consequences of failing to comply.
- Discuss specific barriers and personal protective equipment, as well as effective and appropriate pre-cleaning, chemical disinfection, and sterilization of instruments and medical devices aimed at preventing pathogen transmission.
- Describe specific high-risk practices and procedures that increase the risk exposing dental professionals and patients to potentially infectious material.
- Discuss the role of the CDC, OSHA and OSAP as they relate to infection control in dentistry.
- Explain microbiology basics, including the chain of infection and its components.
- Discuss microorganism types and potential modes of transmission in the dental setting.
- Explain the rationale for Standard Precautions and compare/contrast them with the Universal Precautions.
- Discuss the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures and best antisepsis practices in the dental office.
Great lecture. Instructor is easy to understand and all info can be applied right away at the dental office. Thank you.

About Live, Interactive Continuing Education Webinars
A live, interactive webinar is similar to attending a continuing education seminar in your community, except that you attend via your computer, tablet or mobile phone. Each course is live and allows and encourages your participation. As long as you have access to a device that can play sound, you can participate in an ACES webinar. No special computer knowledge or equipment is required to participate in our webinars. When you enroll in an ACES course, you will be sent an email with the course syllabus and complete information on how to join the webinar. At the conclusion of your live webinar, you will receive an email with a link to your online quiz. Once you complete your quiz, you’ll automatically receive your continuing education certificate via email.
