This introductory course discusses sleep-disordered breathing, how to identify it in patients, and how it affects dental and orthodontic issues in both adults and children. We will review the signs, symptoms, and causes of snoring and sleep apnea. The course covers basic terminology, explains how to screen patients for sleep-disordered breathing, and provides options for further evaluation/treatment with appliances or through a sleep lab.

After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:

  1. Review the anatomy of the airway
  2. Learn basic sleep terminology
  3. Gain exposure to the different sleep appliances available
  4. Learn how to examine the mouth and oral structures for airway issues
  5. Become familiar with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and other screening tools
  6. Become familiar with the stages of sleep and EEG readings
  7. Review Metabolic Syndrome
  8. Review melatonin production and other hormones important in sleep
