Obesity and the Challenges it Presents
Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Course
3 Hours Credits
Instructor: Dr. Joanne Conaway, N.D., B.S.N., R.N.
Obesity is a major health challenge in the United States. In the United States over 55 percent of adults are considered overweight and 23 percent of adults are considered obese. The increase in obesity is also spreading to children, with one in five American kids now classified as overweight.
Obesity is now considered a disease in its own right and it is also associated with an increased risk of hypertension, type II diabetes, coronary artery disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, some cancers and even periodontal disease.
The dental professional needs to understand the ramifications of obesity both from the patient’s health perspective and from a dental patient management perspective.
After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:
- Discuss the medical definition and statistical determinations for overweight and obese individuals.
- Discuss the change in the prevalence of overweight and obese individuals over the last 30 years.
- Describe the health risks associated with obesity.
- Discuss the most common causes of obesity.
- Describe the various treatment options for obesity.
- Explain how obesity can impact the dental office.
About Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Seminars:
A live, interactive webcast seminar is similar to attending a continuing education seminar in your community,
except that you attend via your computer. Each course is done live in a format that allows your participation.
Anyone who has access to a computer that can play sound can participate in an ACES webcast seminar. No
special computer knowledge or equipment is required to participate in our webcast seminars.
When you enroll in any ACES webcast course, you will be sent an e-mail with complete information on how to
join the online seminar and a copy of the course syllabus. At the conclusion of your live seminar, you will complete
a course examination online. You will then be able to print your continuing education certificate from your computer.
