Course Description:
Necrotizing periodontal disease is a localized, often acute, gingival inflammation usually brought about by a bacterial infection with possible related etiological factors. This disease can be further subdivided into two sub-classifications. If this condition presents as an acute infection of the gingiva without further damage to the periodontal tissue, it is referred to as necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. If the infection has progressed deeper into the periodontium, it sub-classified as necrotizing periodontitis.
This course will discuss the common symptoms, etiologies and treatment options for patients suffering from conditions such as:
- Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis
- Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Periodontitis
- Oral Thrush (Candida albicans)
- Black Hairy Tongue
- Angular Cheilitis
- Geographic Tongue (benign migratory glossitis)
After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:
- Identify the difference between Necrotizing Periodontal Disease (NPD) and basic gingivitis
- Effectively identify and treat Candida albicans (Oral Thrush)
- Identify the causes of NPD, Angular Cheilitis and Geographic Tongue(migratory glossitis)
- Understand the similarities and differences in the treatment of these diseases
- Understand the difference between Black Hairy Tongue and Geographic Tongue
