The Periodontal - Systemic Connection

Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Course
3 Hours Credits

Instructor: Dr. Paul R. Kamen, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.

Course Description:

It seems that every month we receive dental journals that contain articles about the connection between oral health and systemic disease. Most of us have long recognized that there is some connection between oral and systemic health.

This course was developed to explore four systemic conditions frequently associated with oral disease. The oral disease most frequently cited as a possible contributor to systemic diseases is periodontal disease. The systemic diseases most often cited are: pregnancy complications, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and the negative effects of tobacco use.

Before discussing specific medical complications, we will review the current understanding of the nature of dental plaque. Much has been learned about plaque in recent years. We now know that plaque bacteria attach to oral surfaces in very specific ways. We have also learned a great deal about specific microorganisms in dental plaque and the pathogenic mechanisms the bacteria deploy, resulting in inflammation and progression of periodontal disease.

After taking this course, the participant should have a good understanding of current evidence that relates periodontal disease and the systemic conditions discussed above.

After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the historical basis linking oral disease and systemic disease
  2. Understand the methods investigators use to determine how oral disease can affect parts of the body distant from the oral cavity
  3. Understand the scientific basis of claims that periodontal disease can affect tissues and organs distant from the oral cavity
  4. Educate and counsel patients regarding specific issues related to their oral and systemic health
  5. Be perceived by patients as a vital link in the maintenance of their overall health

About Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Seminars:

A live, interactive webcast seminar is similar to attending a continuing education seminar in your community,
except that you attend via your computer. Each course is done live in a format that allows your participation.

Anyone who has access to a computer that can play sound can participate in an ACES webcast seminar. No
special computer knowledge or equipment is required to participate in our webcast seminars.

When you enroll in any ACES webcast course, you will be sent an e-mail with complete information on how to
join the online seminar and a copy of the course syllabus. At the conclusion of your live seminar, you will complete
a course examination online. You will then be able to print your continuing education certificate from your computer.
