Periodontal Disease in the Baby Boom Population

By Paul R. Kamen, DDS, FACD

Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine

Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Course
3 Hours Credits

Instructor: Dr. Paul R. Kamen, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.

Course Description:

The first wave of “Baby Boomers” turned 65 in 2010. Speculation about the effects of this generation on our society has been rife for many years. Now that this major demographic shift has occurred, all sectors of society, especially health care, must be prepared to meet the needs and expectations of this unique segment of our population. The focus of this course will be on the population of middle aged and older adults who are still active, ambulatory, and seeking dental care in community based private practices.

This course will examine the myths and realities related to age, periodontal disease, oral implants, and esthetics for this population. A significant portion will be devoted to the vast and growing poly-pharmacy of this patient population and the dental professional’s responsibility to be aware of these medications and their potential interactions with dental pathology and treatment.

Significant changes in the epidemiology of aging over the past decades will be presented to support the notion that this generation is truly different from previous generations.

We will take a “tour” of clinical presentations and discuss examples of clinical management and diagnosis.

The challenges of implant placement in this population will be discussed, and potential solutions presented.

While many in this generation of patients seem to be eternally young, none are immortal. Prevalence of significant medical conditions with implications for oral disease and dental care in this (and younger) populations will be presented.

To manage these medical conditions, large numbers of patients are taking multiple medications.

The significant and ever growing role of pharmacologic management, and the introduction of new medications will continue to be one of the most important issues for dental management for this population. The presentation will conclude with a cautionary tale about one of these new medications.

After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:

  1. Describe the unique demography of the “Baby Boom population”
  2. Understand the changing paradigms concerning tooth loss
  3. Describe the issues concerning implant placement in geriatric population
  4. Understand the common medications taken by older patients, and implications for treatment
  5. Understand the relationship between systemic disease and periodontal disease
  6. Describe the challenges of new medications

About Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Seminars:

A live, interactive webcast seminar is similar to attending a continuing education seminar in your community,
except that you attend via your computer. Each course is done live in a format that allows your participation.

Anyone who has access to a computer that can play sound can participate in an ACES webcast seminar. No
special computer knowledge or equipment is required to participate in our webcast seminars.

When you enroll in any ACES webcast course, you will be sent an e-mail with complete information on how to
join the online seminar and a copy of the course syllabus. At the conclusion of your live seminar, you will complete
a course examination online. You will then be able to print your continuing education certificate from your computer.
